Gallery Folders | Witherlingsforest spirits • arborgeists • cryptids Possessing animal-, plant- and ghost-like qualities, Witherlings are difficult to classify or define. All known Witherlings are made of natural materials or ephemera that are animated by hidden mechanisms. They are intelligent, mysterious, and diverse in form and behavior. composition Witherlings’ bodies are comprised of both physical and spiritual matter. They may possess body parts that grow or live as plant or animal organisms as well as body parts that are ethereal or contrary to the laws of physics. It should be noted that Witherlings only assume an animal-like form in image, not in function, as they do not typically possess biological functions or systems associated with animal physiology (though they may mimic aspects of animals’ bodies). Their bodily systems more resemble plants, but are also sustained by spiritual anatomy; little is known about this aspect of their form and function. ethology Witherlings exhibit widely different behavior depending on the strain and are highly individualized. Common Witherlings are largely social beings, and very much enjoy not only the presence of other Witherlings but also the presence of physical or non-physical entities visiting their habitat. Common Witherlings exhibit many animal-like behaviors. Viridiform Witherlings are also social with each other, but are mostly shy toward beings outside of their group (with exceptions). Viridiform Witherlings exhibit mostly plant-like behavior. Amorphous Witherlings are very elusive and often solitary, or exist in groups that possess a hive mind or act as a single being. Amorphous Witherlings exhibit behavior more related to abiotic systems and natural phenomena. See specific type entries for more information. Witherlings is a personal world/creature design project.
